| CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Panthers middle linebacker Jon Beason has no intentions of letting a torn Achilles tendon end his football career. In his first interview since suffering his season-ending injury in week one, the three-time Pro Bowl selection said he plans to be "better than ever" when he returns next season. "At first it's hard to come to grips with missing a play, missing a game," said Beason, whose streak of 65 straight starts ended with Carolina's loss to Arizona on Sept. 11. "Then having to sit home in a splint, not able to leave the house, it's tough because I couldn't be here for my team. But now that I can, I feel better about it. I'm content. The outlook is forward. I'm just concentrating on what I can do as a teammate. For me, it's all about September of 2012." Beason and teammate Thomas Davis, who's also on injured reserve, still attend team meetings, watch film of opponents and give the team's younger linebackers tips. Beason injured his Achilles while trying to run down Cardinals tight end Jeff King. "It felt like I got hit with a stick," Beason said. "When I fell down, I thought someone had tripped me, like when someone hits your heel and you stumble. When I turned around, I realized no one was there. Then I grabbed my calf, and it was just mush." Beason, who uses a self-operated wheeling scooter to get around, said he'll be out of his cast soon and will then wear a walking boot. "I plan on being better. I've had setbacks before, and there's always an opportunity to do something great when you come back. | Everyone in Philadelphia is seeking an explanation for why the "Dream Team" is off to a 1-4 start, and this week, much of the blame has been directed toward Eagles defensive coordinator Juan Castillo. | When Rob Ryan's Dallas defense lines up against the New EnglandPatriots on Sunday, the Cowboys are shooting to keep Tom Brady guessing right down to the end. So what can the Patriots expect from the NFL's fourth-ranked defense? "Pretty much the kitchen sink, to put it lightly," defensive end Kenyon Coleman told The Dallas Morning News. Dallas has closely studied New England's 34-14 loss to Cleveland last season, the last time the Patriots were held to under 30 points in a regular-season game. Ryan was the Browns' defensive coordinator at the time, and nobody has allowed fewer points since. PAUL, Minn. -- A report released Wednesday raised new questions about the cost and complications of building a Minnesota Vikings stadium on a heavily contaminated site in a Twin Cities suburb as the team said it saw nothing to derail the project and vowed to push harder than ever to get approval from reluctant state lawmakers. Mark Dayton and prepared by the Metropolitan Council, called the goal of completing the Arden Hills stadium by 2015 "unrealistic" and said 2016 or 2017 was more likely. A longer construction timeframe would likely increase the current $1.1 billion price tag, the report said, threatening to tap out a half-cent Ramsey County sales tax hike proposed to pay about a third of the total cost. Dayton, in a news release, refused to back either the Arden Hills site or any of three potential sites that would keep the team in downtown Minneapolis. He said if team officials want the suburban site they must indicate "whether they will accept the possibly longer timeline ... and whether they will pay for any resulting additional costs." | Steve Smith's experiencing a revival this season behind the play of rookie Cam Newton, and the Panthers wideout isn't about to let some rough play get him down. Saints coach Sean Payton confirmed Thursday that safety Roman Harper was fined for his late hit on Smith after the wideout's first-quarter, 54-yard touchdown catch in the Panthers' 30-27 loss. Harper tagged Smith with force just after the receiver crossed the goal line, a hit that resulted in a tussle between the teams. ESPN reported Thursday that Harper's fine stands at $15,000. The NFL Fall Meeting earlier this week indicated what the league hopes again will be proven next Sunday in London: The effort to go global with football is working. There are statistics to back it up. The NFL has 10 sponsors in the United Kingdom, where five years ago there was one. TV ratings are up 91 percent and Super Bowl viewership has grown by 74 percent in that timeframe, and the league counts 11 million fans, 2 million classified as "avid fans" in that nation. Heck, the BBC is covering the NFL, and drew 1.3 million viewers for its Super Bowl pregame show. But as the league prepares to play its fifth game in the NFL International Series, the next big steps -- expanding past the U.K. and, at some point, finding a way to put a team in Europe permanently -- aren't close to happening. Is the game having the effect desired? Yes. Does that mean it's time to try to turn those steps into leaps? No. Not yet, anyway. "It's definitely working. All the metrics point to that," said Chris Parsons, NFL Vice President of International. "From a total international perspective, we've doubled our international business. That's incredibly positive." But when asked about having a team in London, Parsons said, "We're certainly not putting a timeline on having a team there. We're taking this one step at a time. We know what we have to do, and that's demonstrate the fan growth we have in the past." And as for going outside the UK, Parsons explained, "We'd use the games in London as a blueprint. But to do that, it has to work in one place. There's no point in going beyond that if it doesn't. So we're focusing the revolution on the U.K." So here's where you stop. On one hand, Parsons says "it's definitely working". On the other, he adds it "has to work" in London for the league to grow further. "We want to play more than one game a season there, that's an important success criteria for us," Parsons said. "We want to establish that we can build fans for a team that goes over there and participates. Right now, we've had great growth, but we need to keep moving toward being a top five sport in the U.K. That's our ambition. That's what we have to prove we can do." Football ranks somewhere around seventh or eighth in popularity, with Parsons sizing up the top five sports in the U.K. as soccer, golf, tennis, cricket and rugby. | "There's nothing fancy about Fister. He's just effective, throwing strikes with remarkable consistency. He gave up seven hits in his 7 1/3 innings Tuesday, but Fister didn't walk a batter for the eighth time in his 12 starts with the Tigers.Since coming to Detroit in a trade that cost the Tigers four young prospects, Fister has 70 strikeouts and just nine walks, an improvement from an already strong 89-32 ratio in Seattle.Perhaps it's the increased confidence that comes with pitching for a team that doesn't leave him tight-roping through low-scoring affairs. | Giants defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy was suspended four games by the league for a violation of the substance-abuse policy.Kennedy, 31, signed with the Giants in August and has been an effective part of the defensive line rotation.A former first-round pick by St. Louis, Kennedy was released by the Vikings during the offseason.In just nine games last season, the nine-year veteran recorded only eight tackles and a half sack as he tried to come back from an early season scope to his knee to relieve tendinitis.But the Giants signed Kennedy after rookie Marvin Austin was lost for the season. He has four tackles in five games.If you blinked during Sunday's game, chances are you missed the NFL debut of second-year man Jim Cordle, an offensive lineman who came into the game late in the fourth quarter when right guard Chris Snee had to leave the game due to a concussion.That's why head coach Tom Coughlin smiled when Cordle's name came up during his day-after press conference.That is a young man that should be recognized, and the reason why I say that is a couple years ago when we went over to Pittsburgh, they lost their long snapper, their backup center sent one over the punter's head and we got a safety out of it and it provided great momentum for us, he said, referencing the importance of having a reliable backup center on the roster.Cordle initially entered the game as the long snapper after Zak DeOssie was forced out due to a concussion. He then later received a smattering of snaps on offense, first at center and then at guard, after Snee's exit.This kid comes in the game, made a number of very good snaps, got involved in the coverage, had to go in at play at the guard spot and center spot, and did a nice job of coming into a game of that magnitude and maintaining his poise.The Seahawks' opening-drive touchdown, an 11-yard pass to receiver Ben Obomanu, marked the first time in their last 10 games that the Giants had allowed an opening-possession touchdown. The last time the Giants' defense allowed an opponent to score on its opening drive was on Nov. 28, 2010 against Jacksonville. | The Browns need to be a more balanced team coming off their bye week.Getting running back Peyton Hillis more involved in the offense would take much of the burden off the shoulders of quarterback Colt McCoy.McCoy is on pace to throw almost 400 passes, which is far too much to ask of a young quarterback. The Browns want him to develop, but they don't want to force the offense to him.That's where Hillis comes in. Coach Pat Shurmur has said that Hillis is an excellent player who should be the focal point of the team's running game, but to date, games haven't been called that way.Increasing Hillis' workload would reduce would not only give McCoy's arm a break, but it could make Hillis a more effective runner.Through four games, McCoy is averaging 43 passes per game, and Hillis is averaging 18 rushes. A power back like Hillis gains strength and momentum as her runs, so 18 is too few.Asking McCoy to throw about 25 times per game would give Hillis and Montario Hardesty another 18 carries or so. Adjusting the pass-run mix figures to benefit the entire offense.Cornerback Joe Haden did not practice Monday as the Browns returned from their bye week.Haden sprained his left knee in the loss to Tennessee, and coach Pat Shurmur did not put a timetable on Haden's return except to say he was uncertain about Sunday.Sprains usually cause four to six weeks of inactivity, but it's possible Haden could return sooner.Haden's injury is not insignificant. He has been the Browns' best player in the secondary, to the point he was used solely on Brandon Marshall in a win over Miami.Losing him affects the team's ability to match up corners with receivers, and it also affects depth. Nickel back Dimitri Patterson would move up if Haden can't play, which makes rookie Buster Skrine the nickel back.No team likes to lose its best defensive back, but Haden's absence could be more significant than usual. Allen leads the NFL with 8.5, while Robison has 4.5.However, issues loom on the other side of the ball, where the Vikings actually average more yards rushing 160 than passing 155.8 per game. Quarterback Donovan McNabb has been so out of sync that Frazier spent a large chunk of his press conference the day after a 24-point win defending his decision to stick with McNabb as his starter. There's also the ongoing drama involving receiver Bernard Berrian, who was a surprise inactive on Sunday after reportedly missing two team meetings.We definitely wanted to smell and taste a win to see what it's like again, receiver Percy Harvin said.
